Facts About Stainless Steel

Stainless steel’s unique properties make it ideal for applications required in the Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Food, and Chemical industries. The term “stainless” refers to the phenomenon of passivity, an effect of the extra chromium in the steel. In the presence of oxygen, an invisible, nonreactive (i.e. passive), chromium oxide film constantly forms on the surface. This also gives stainless steel its shiny appearance. To further enhance this self-healing, self-forming property, Eagle Stainless offers electropolishing.

Electropolishing, or “reverse plating,” is a process of surface conditioning which has the dual effect of removing surface imperfections and concentrating the chromium in the stainless steel on the surface. The electropolished steel is physically stronger (since the usual sites for stress cracking are removed), while the chromium-rich layer further increases the metal’s natural corrosion resistance and creates an ultra-smooth, bright, and hygienic finish which complements the following intrinsic benefits of stainless steel:

Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel resists corrosion from sterilizing solutions, most oxidizing acids and organic chemicals, and many inorganic chemicals. In addition, stainless steel is easily cleanable after exposure to such substances.

Mechanical Properties

Stainless steel is tough and maintains its strength at high and low temperatures.

Ductility

Stainless steel’s ability to be easily welded and machined allows for modifications or special fabrications without sacrificing strength or corrosion resistance.

Value

Stainless steel is a great value when its cost is compared to the benefits that it yields. Eagle Stainless uses both 316L and 304 stainless steel. While type 304 stainless is strong and corrosion resistant, type 316L, with its lower carbon content and higher nickel and molybdenum content, provides increased resistance to corrosion and pitting, essential for pharmaceutical applications. Eagle Stainless’ line of biological transfer bottles (BTB) are fabricated only in 316L, as they are used almost exclusively for pharmaceutical applications.

For applications requiring specific properties which may go beyond those of 316L, Eagle Stainless offers other alloys such as 317L, Hastelloy® and Inconel®. Our sales/engineering staff will work hand in hand with you to find the right alloy for your specific applications.
