Stainless Steel Hose Barbs

Stainless steel hose barb fittings are used for connecting soft, flexible tubing in low-pressure applications. The tubes or hoses may be made of rubber, vinyl, polyurethane or similar materials. The barb, which refers to an angled ridge or bump on the fitting, is sized for the inner diameter of the soft tubing. This interior diameter is referred to as the tubing ID.

The barb on a hose barb fitting should be slightly larger than the tubing ID. The soft tubing expands as it is pushed over the barbs. Then once past the barbs, the soft tubing relaxes and returns to its original diameter, gripping the barbs and forming a tight seal.  When the tubing and stainless steel hose barbs are properly matched, they are extremely leak resistant.

Clamps may be used with stainless steel hose barbs for additional support, but they are not always necessary. They are more likely to be used in situations where bursts of pressure or heat that could expand the tubing are a concern.  Environments with excessive vibration or tubing that does not fully relax and grip around the barb are other reasons for using clamps. However, proper installation is critical to avoid damaging the soft tubing or interfering with the natural seal between barb and hose.

Hose barb fittings are reliable, cost-effective connectors and used in a variety of applications, from retail beverage dispensers to agricultural, industrial, biotech, or pharmaceutical applications. Stainless steel hose barbs are even used in home settings, for garden or fish tank hose connections, for example. They are convenient and effective for connecting tubing or hosing that will handle air, gas, or fluids.

Hose barbs can be made from a variety of materials, such as plastic or copper. However, for maximum durability, strength and corrosion resistance, stainless steel hose barbs are the premiere choice.

Since the one disadvantage of a hose barb fitting is that the tight seal between tube and fitting can make it difficult to disconnect, choosing a long-lasting, durable material for the barb fitting is especially important.

Eagles’ stainless steel hose barbs are manufactured using precision CNC machines and high-quality, corrosion-resistant type 316L stainless steel.

Additionally, our stainless steel hose barbs include an electropolished finish as a standard feature. Electropolishing provides an ultra-clean-smooth finish that meets the highest pharmaceutical standards with increased corrosion resistance.
